Team Around the Family (TAF) Meeting

Information for Parents – Non-Attendance / EBSA

What is a TAF meeting?

A Team Around the Family (TAF) meeting brings you together with school and professionals to understand your child’s needs and agree support. It ensures everyone works together so you are not managing alone.

Why has this meeting been arranged?

TAF is often used when a child is struggling to attend school due to anxiety, SEN, or other difficulties. The aim is to understand the reasons and find the right support.

What is EBSA?

Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is when a child cannot attend school due to anxiety or emotional distress. It is not simply refusal and needs supportive responses.

What happens in the meeting?

You will be asked about what is going well, your concerns, and what may help. Professionals share ideas and a joint plan is agreed.

Possible support options

  • Phased return
  • Safe spaces or adjustments
  • Reduced timetable (if agreed)
  • Emotional support
  • Referrals or further assessment

Outcome

A written plan will set out actions, responsibilities and review dates.

Key points

  • This is supportive, not about blame
  • Your and your child’s and young person  voice matters
  • Support should be realistic and safe
  • You can ask questions at any time

Remember: Your child is not choosing to struggle. The goal is to understand and support them back into education safely
