Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Why We Have This Policy

We want to explain how AI (Artificial Intelligence) might be used by RIASS and reassure you that families, children, and young people will always receive accurate, impartial, and lawful advice and support.

RIASS is here to give free, confidential, and impartial help about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). AI will never replace the personal support you get from our trained team.

Your Right to Information and Support

You have the right to get information and advice in a way that works for you. This can include using digital tools or AI if you choose. However, AI is not always accurate or up to date especially when it comes to SEND law and education processes. That’s why we always recommend checking important information with a qualified professional.

Why AI Can Be Risky for SEND and Legal Advice

AI tools (like ChatGPT, CoPilot etc) can sound very confident, but sometimes they give wrong or misleading answers. They might even make up sources or quotes. Because of this, AI should never be your only source of legal advice about SEND.

How RIASS Might Use AI

If we use AI, it will only be for simple tasks like:

  • Drafting general information
  • Making written content easier to read
  • Helping with admin work

We will not use AI to:

  • Give legal advice
  • Interpret SEND law
  • Replace our trained staff
  • Make decisions about individual cases

Everything we share is checked by trained SEND specialists.

What RIASS Will Never Do

We will never:

  • Tell families to rely on AI for legal advice
  • Present AI content as professional advice
  • Use AI instead of human support
  • Let AI decide outcomes for children or young people

Why Human Support Matters

You have a legal right to free, impartial advice from trained SEND specialists. Our advisers:

  • Know SEND law and guidance
  • Give accurate, up-to-date information
  • Offer support tailored to your situation
  • Explain your rights and options clearly

AI can’t replace this expertise or protect your legal rights.

Tips If You Use AI

If you choose to use AI:

  • Treat it as general guidance only
  • Don’t rely on it for legal decisions
  • Always check with a qualified professional

If you’re unsure or need accurate advice, contact your local SENDIAS service.

Keeping This Policy Up to Date

We will review this policy regularly to reflect:

  • Changes in SEND law
  • Developments in AI
  • National guidance and court rulings

Remember:
You are entitled to free, impartial, and confidential support. AI can be helpful, but your trained SENDIAS advisers are the most reliable source of advice and support.
